Why Temporary Phone Numbers?

Many services now require phone number verification as a second layer of identity confirmation, even for basic access. This creates the same problem that disposable email addresses were designed to solve: you are asked to provide a piece of personal information to a service that does not need to hold it long-term.

A virtual phone number lets you complete SMS verification without exposing your real number. Once the verification is done, the number expires and the connection between you and the service is limited to whatever account you created, not your permanent phone identity.

For developers and QA teams, temporary phone numbers are even more valuable. Testing SMS-based OTP flows in automated tests currently requires either real SIM cards, paid testing services, or mocking at the application layer. A real virtual number removes all of those compromises.

Important Limitations

Virtual phone numbers are not suitable for all verification flows. Some platforms actively block virtual and VoIP number ranges. Success rates vary by platform and country. Numbers are shared across users, so messages are visible to anyone viewing the same number β€” do not use for sensitive accounts.

How It Works

The same three-step flow as our email service, applied to SMS.

  1. Pick a Number

Choose a country from the picker above. A real virtual phone number is assigned to your session instantly β€” no SIM, no app.

  2. Use It to Verify

Enter the number wherever a site asks for SMS or OTP verification, exactly as you would a normal mobile number.

  3. Read the Code

Incoming SMS messages appear in your browser within seconds, with verification codes highlighted for one-tap copying.

Temporary Phone Number FAQ

What is a temp number?

A temp number, or temporary phone number, is a disposable virtual number you can use to receive SMS and OTP verification codes without giving out your real mobile number. It works in the browser with no SIM and no app.

Which countries are available?

We currently offer numbers from the United States, Canada, and Israel. Numbers are real Twilio-powered virtual numbers, not simulated.

Is it free?

Yes. Numbers are shared and free to use, the same model as our temporary email service. No account or payment required.

Are the numbers shared?

Yes. Numbers are shared across users β€” anyone viewing the same number can see incoming messages. Do not use these for sensitive accounts or services that require private communication.

Will it work for every website?

Not always. Some platforms actively block virtual and VoIP number ranges, so success rates vary by site and country. It works well for most casual verification flows.

Can I send SMS from a temporary number?

No. Like our email service, temporary phone numbers are receive-only. You can read incoming SMS and OTP codes but cannot send outbound messages.

How long does the number last?

Numbers are assigned per browser session and refreshed when you pick a new country or click refresh. Messages are stored temporarily and cleared after a short period.
